About Bagdale, Whitby

Whitby has always been one of our favourite holiday destinations. So, after visiting many resorts across the UK looking for the perfect place, we knew buying a holiday home and rental apartment in Whitby was the ideal choice for us.

If it’s your first visit to Whitby let us share a little bit about this picture postcard Town, starting with No 12 Bagdale. Notably, there is only one street named Bagdale in the country making it unique in Great Britain.

Bagdale was first spotted on historical maps in 1595, as a continuation of Baxtergate. However, Bagdale was not considered a street at this time. Even though Bagdale Hall (built 1516) and a few other dwellings had been built, their address in 1595 was “nere unto Whitbie”.

It was the Georgian era that shaped the Bagdale you see today. When, the 1700’s brought the aristocracy, rich shipping merchants and sea captains who built homes here. And, it was in the 1750’s that the stately mansion townhouses of Bagdale began their distinguished life.

The History of Bagdale Hall Hotel in Whitby

A key highlight of Bagdale is Bagdale Hall, a historic hotel dating back to 1516. Originally built for the Conyers family, it features stunning architecture from moments passed. In fact, it still retains many of its original features.

Bagdale Hall’s history is deeply intertwined with Whitby’s heritage, it has seen numerous notable residents. For instance, James Conyers and Captain Browne Bushell. Over the centuries, the hall has been restored and preserved, so maintains its historic essence while offering modern comforts.

Bagdale’s Maritime Legacy

Next to our residence stands the former home of William Scoresby Senior, renowned for inventing the crow’s nest. This innovative maritime device, first employed in 1807, consisted of wood and canvas, accessed through a small trap door at its base. Inside, it featured racks for a telescope, speaking trumpet, and signal flags.

Scoresby’s expertise in shipbuilding is evident in life-sized model ships found in the Whitby Museum. In fact, each is adorned with a replica of the crow’s nest atop its main mast. Positioned high above the deck, the crow’s nest was where the ship’s master or mate would vigilantly scan the horizon for whales. Often they would spend hours at a stretch in observation, navigating through icy waters.

Born in 1760 near Pickering, William Scoresby Senior initially worked as an agricultural labourer before embarking on a seafaring career. Joining the crew of the Henrietta in 1785, he swiftly rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of captain by 1791. His seafaring achievements culminated in 1806 when he set a record for sailing the farthest north, accompanied by his son William Junior as chief mate. Retiring from whaling in 1823, Scoresby’s contributions to maritime navigation and exploration remain celebrated.

A blue plaque at 13 Bagdale commemorates William Scoresby Senior’s residence. Therefore, honouring his legacy as both an inventor and esteemed seafarer.
