Five-Storey Period Townhouse with Original Features, Plenty of Space, and Exceptional Views

Set across five generous floors, this well-loved, dog friendly townhouse in the heart of Whitby offers room to breathe, character throughout, and one of the best views in town—stretching out towards the sea and the iconic Whitby Abbey. This isn’t a glossy show home—and it doesn’t pretend to be. But what it does offer is something increasingly rare: a home with heart, space, and a real sense of place.

The layout is practical and distinctive, with a main room on each level, connected by a traditional staircase with carved spindles and natural timber handrails. You’ll spot exposed beams, uneven walls, and original wood panelling throughout the property—clear signs of its age and authenticity, which give the home a unique, lived-in feel.

It’s the kind of place where muddy boots and sandy paws are more than welcome—ideal for dog lovers who want a comfortable, relaxed base by the sea.

Ground Floor – Rustic Kitchen and Family Bathroom

The ground floor houses the kitchen and dining space—simple, functional, and very much the social hub of the house. Painted ceiling beams, cream shaker-style units, and warm terracotta-style tiles give it a rustic, country-cottage feel. The room easily fits a six-seater table which can also be extended to seven, and there’s a modern oven, hob, microwave, and even a washing machine tucked beneath the counter. It’s a welcoming, unpretentious space where everyone can gather, include any furry four legged companions.

Next to the kitchen is a full bathroom with a freestanding tub—ideal for unwinding after a long walk on the beach.

First Floor – Warm and Inviting Lounge

Head up to the first floor and you’ll find the lounge. This room is full of character, with its original wood-panelled walls, fireplace, and sash-style windows. It’s a relaxed space with a mix of seating that makes it easy to settle into after a long day. The two large windows bring in plenty of natural light, and the traditional details give the room a warm, homely feel.

Upper Floors – Three Bedrooms, Two Showers and a WC

Across the top three floors, the property offers three double bedrooms, two shower rooms, and a separate WC. Each bedroom has its own character, and they all benefit from the generous proportions that run throughout the house.

One-bedroom features original wood panelling and an iron-framed bed, with a decorative fireplace adding a traditional touch. Another room offers plenty of space for a family, comfortably fitting both a double and a single bed.

These are not showy spaces however, there’s no shortage of space, and each space feels individual rather than cookie-cutter.

Top Floor – Rooftop Terrace with Unbeatable Views

The top floor is perhaps the biggest highlight. A double bedroom with French doors leads straight onto a private rooftop terrace. There is plenty of space, with two stackable bistro tables and 7 chairs, making it an ideal spot for a morning coffee or an evening drink.

From here, you can enjoy sweeping views across Whitby’s rooftops, down to the harbour, and out towards the sea. The view of Whitby Abbey – eye level with the 199^th step is particularly special, especially as the light changes throughout the day. The bedroom also has its own shower and WC, cleverly tucked beneath the sloping ceilings.

Fantastic Central Location

The location couldn’t be more convenient, nestled in the gentrified Victorian quarter. Just moments from both the beach, the harbour and beautiful Pannett Park, the house is perfectly placed for exploring all that Whitby has to offer—whether that’s walking the famous 199 Steps, browsing the town’s shops and galleries, or sampling fish and chips by the seafront. All the attractions Whitby has to offer are within easy walking distance with a plethora of gastro pubs and restaurants on the doorstep.

Enclosed high walled Yard

A useful space to sit outside or let your dogs get some fresh air before heading out to the beach.

In short, this isn’t a pristine or polished new-build—but that’s not the point. This is a property with soul, with bags of space, and very, very good views.

Important Information.

During the late Autumn – the top bedroom is being converted from a double bedroom to a sky room, giving even more opportunity for guests to enjoy the stunning views across to the Abbey and Sea.

This will mean the room will no longer have a double bed, this will be replaced by a double sofa bed. Please take this into consideration when booking for 6 people.

Entrance Hall

The apartment is reached via the stairs to the 4th floor – worth the climb for the lovely sense of privacy and the views that come with it. You’ll reach the apartment via the stairs to the top floor, stepping into a welcoming entryway with exposed beams and a handy spot for shoes and coats, so you can instantly settle in and make yourself comfortable.

Bedrooms

The master bedroom is tucked under the eaves, with a sloping ceiling, drawers for your things, hanging storage. As well as this there is also an attic window with views over Whitby and a blackout blind for lazy lie-ins.
The second bedroom is thoughtfully furnished with two single beds and boasts a porthole window looking out onto the old street, and a hanging rail for clothes. It’s a great room for children, friends sharing, or even grown-ups who just enjoy their own space.

If you’d prefer a larger bed, the singles can be pushed together and the mattresses zipped to create a super-comfy king-size.

Kitchen

With its cheerful blue cabinetry and retro touches, the fully equipped kitchen is a delight to cook in. You’ll find everything needed for self-catering – including a dishwasher for easy clean-ups – along with a striking view of a nearby church through a tall arched window, the perfect backdrop for morning coffee.

Bathroom

Generously sized for a group of four, the bathroom offers a full-sized bath for long soaks and a separate shower for when you’re in a hurry. The traditional blue tiling keeps the space light and fresh, and there’s plenty of room for towels and toiletries, making it practical for a group of four.

Living & Dining Room

The living room is where this apartment really shines. A bold mix of boho and art deco influences runs throughout, complete with a colourful floral wall mural, rich fabrics, and eclectic furnishings.

Comfy seating in jewel tones and the beams running overhead create a lovely spot to relax, whether you’re watching a film on the flat-screen TV that has Netflix and Sky, or sitting down with a book off the shelf. Big windows let in plenty of light, with views over Whitby’s rooftops to remind you exactly where you are.

There’s also a dining table with seating for four, perfect for leisurely breakfasts, hearty dinners, or an evening of board games.
