Chapel Yard Lookout – Elevated Harbour Views in the Heart of Whitby
Wake up above the harbour, step outside for breakfast overlooking the rooftops, and wander straight onto Church Street within seconds.
Chapel Yard Lookout sits just above Whitby’s historic harbourside, accessed via one short flight of 27 steps. Elevated from the road and tucked away from passing foot traffic, it offers a peaceful retreat while remaining right in the centre of everything.
Beautifully refurbished and thoughtfully styled, this period cottage is ideal for couples, families or friends looking for a relaxed coastal stay with everything on the doorstep.
Private Patio with Harbour Outlook
The small private patio to the front is a real suntrap, particularly in the evenings. With outdoor seating and a table, it’s perfect for morning coffee, a takeaway supper, or a glass of wine as the light fades over the harbour.
Open-Plan Living with Wood Burner
Inside, the light-filled open-plan living space blends comfort and character. The lounge centres around an exposed brick chimney breast and wood-burning stove — a cosy favourite during cooler months.
A Smart TV and complimentary Wi-Fi make evenings in easy and comfortable, while the large window fills the space with natural light.
The adjoining kitchen features sleek cabinetry and integrated appliances, with plenty of workspace for preparing breakfast before the beach or a relaxed evening meal.
Bedrooms with Harbour Views
Arranged over three floors, the cottage offers space and privacy for up to four guests.
King-size master bedroom
A bright and airy room with harbour views across Whitby’s rooftops. Calm, comfortable and perfect for slow mornings.
Twin bedroom
Two single beds make this ideal for children, friends or additional guests. Fresh décor and a peaceful feel complete the space.

The contemporary family bathroom includes a full-size bath and separate walk-in shower — ideal for a long soak after coastal walks or a quick refresh before dinner on Church Street.

Location
Set just yards from Church Street yet elevated and tucked away, the cottage offers the best of both worlds.
Whitby Harbour, the beach, cafés, independent shops and restaurants are all within a short stroll — no need to use the car once you’ve arrived.

Having stayed in many cottages over the years this one was certainly the most comfortable and in an excellent location. The owner has put a lot of thought into the design and interior, everything worked and it was spotlessly clean. We had everything we needed for a comfortable few days. The weather was not kind but the cottages’ central location was an added bonus.
We will certainly go back and stay here again.
We would have no hesitation recommending this beautiful cottage to our family and friends.

Stayed for 3 nights and found the accommodation perfect for my needs. The beds were clean and comfy, the bathroom was immaculate. Tea and coffee facilities were left for guests which are sometimes neglected in holiday home so this was a welcome sight.
It is situated on the east side of the river and as such is closer to Church Street and Sandgate stores which are some of my favourite in the area. Within a stones throw you can find 3 great pubs, ‘The Endeavour’ if you like a traditional boozer, The Quirky Den for the more gothic ambience and my personal favourite, The Green Dragon (named after the Pub from the The Shire in Lord of the Rings) if you like your craft ales.
I would recommend this place to anyone looking a comfy stay. It is tailored to a family unit but this by no means detracts from single travellers like myself.

We’ve recently returned from a wonderful weekend in Whitby staying at chapelyard lookout. On arrival we found the house to be spotless and very welcoming. The kitchen is well equipped and the beds are so comfy (this was a massive bonus for us!) there are lots of little homely touches in the house that we really appreciated and my daughter absolutely loved the twin room. The location couldn’t be better! Less than 5 minutes walk from the house and you’re at the 199 steps up to the abbey. Or a quick walk over the bridge and you’re on the main front! We loved it and would recommend this for anyone taking a trip to Whitby. We actually loved it so much we’ve booked to stay again later in the year!

Lovely 2 night stay at Chapel Yard Lookout. Perfect location, few mins walk to the old town & up to The Abbey & over the bridge to the harbour, more great pubs, cafes, shops, amusements, the pier, etc… The property is immaculate with lots of homely touches, very comfortable main bedroom & beautiful spacious bathroom with a walk in corner shower which we love. The twin bedroom on the top floor is lovely with great views over the harbour. The patio at the front is fabulous & sheltered & a real sun trap, we sat out there one night until the sun went, listening to the seagulls & watching the stars coming out, very special. We would certainly stay again at Chapel Yard Lookout again & recommend it to friends & family.

My sister and I are regular yearly visitors to Whitby – it’s our ancestral home going way back to late 1700s. This apartment was by far the best we have ever stayed at! Beautifully decorated and very quiet at night.
The steps up to the apartment are a bit of a challenge if you’re a senior citizen but worth the effort! There’s no view as such but we were entertained by some baby seagulls being cared for by a very attentive mother on the flat roof opposite. Highly recommended property with a car park nearby.
