So, why is it be troublesome to find free parking in Whitby?  Well, firstly, as with most town centres finding, free central parking sites can be difficult all the time.

Secondly, Whitby is in the top 10 for a holiday destination in the UK. And, the harbour and cobbled shopping streets that are situated in and around the Town hold many types of accommodation for annual holidaymakers to literally walk over the doorstep and enjoy the wonders that Whitby has to offer.

Get free parking in Whitby via Parking Scratch Cards in W Zones

The town of Whitby offers a wonderful variety of B&Bs, holiday cottages, apartments and flats all located centrally which often makes allocated parking difficult. But, not altogether impossible.

So, what are the options when it comes to parking? Whitby offers a variety of controlled parking zones that can be used by scratch card, disc permits, and pay and display methods. 

Whitby Scratchcard Parking Permits

Whitby Holiday rentals supply scratch cards for the duration of your stay.  The parking scratch card will be left in the property and can be picked up as you unload your luggage. The scratch card is a pre-paid parking permit that allows our guests to free on-street parking in the W zones.

Please follow the instructions on the scratch card very carefully and please refer to the following information if you get stuck:

  • You need to scratch the year, month, and day of arrival or your first day off use (Do not scratch off every day of your stay as this will make the permit invalid.),
  • Remember to add your vehicle registration number in the white box next to the W.
  • Remember to add the name of the property you are staying in underneath ‘Holiday Accommodation Name’.
  • The parking scratch card is ONLY valid in the W zones in Whitby – Parking in any other zone could lead to a parking ticket.
  • Once you have followed all the instructions on the scratch card carefully, the parking scratch card must be clearly displayed in your vehicle.
  • Depending on the duration of your stay, you may be provided multiple scratch cards to cover the number of nights of your reservation.

    • Remember to replace the scratch card once it is due to expire. If you are replacing a scratch card that is due to expire, please ensure the day you have scratched off on the new card is the day you are displaying the new card from.

    Failure to follow the instructions could result in a parking ticket so we recommend taking your time to understand the details before filling out the card.

    W = Whitby Parking Zone

    Whitby W zones, in particular, are for pre-paid parking permits and scratchcards which allow guests visiting the area and staying in nearby accommodation to park in this zone.

    Holiday accommodation scratch cards are available for tourists within Whitby’s Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ). Tourists who are staying in Whitby can park in the 2-hour disc, for up to 4 days with a correctly validated scratch card.

    Additional Free Parking in Whitby

    If you’re looking for additional free parking in Whitby, you’re more likely to find this on the West Cliff compared to the Eastside.

    However, before leaving your vehicle, please check all road signs to ensure you aren’t parked in a permit zone, parking zone, or pay-and-display area. If you are unsure, we’d recommend moving your vehicle to another location that clearly states free parking to avoid the chance of receiving a parking ticket.
