Sightseeing in Whitby – Town Centre

In and around Whitby there are many sights to see, for example, the Church of St Mary. This stunning Church overlooks the seaside town. It was founded around 1110, although its interior dates chiefly from the late 18th century.

Despite its old age, St. Mary’s church is still an aesthetically pleasing location to visit and often holds inspiring events, community festivals and offers a place of worship and remembrance.

St. Mary’s church can be found right next to Whitby Abbey, a gothic monastery, which Bram Stoker’s Dracula was based on. As well as St. Mary’s, the 199 Steps are also amongst places to visit in Whitby. The 199 steps are famous and are seen as a pilgrimage among those there for the religious aspect. These mighty steps lead up to the historic structures as well as giving you a view of the town and the whalebone arch.

Museums to visit in Whitby

There are museums in Whitby, most significantly The Whitby Museum and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, displaying many artifacts and paintings.  In both Whitby and all the surrounding areas there are many coastal cruises. This means that you can enjoy the coastline and marine life which is loved among locals and visitors.

Nearby is Robin Hood’s Bay, a picturesque fishing town, which can make for a very pleasant walk across the clifftops. Therefore being a place where you can admire the cove and some very unique pubs and cafes.
