Whitby Cliff Walk

Above all else, Whitby is known for its coastal charm, from the golden sands to the stunning views. So, it is no surprise that one of the most popular walking routes is the Whitby Cliff Walk. From Whitby Abbey it is possible to venture all the way to Robin Hoods Bay across the clifftops.

Robin Hoods Bay is a peaceful fishing village tucked away just 6 miles south of Whitby. This retreat is known amongst walkers and photographers for being such a gorgeous village. It is very much a flash from the past, embracing its maritime history and having many traditional pubs.

Whether it’s for a romantic retreat or a family holiday, Whitby has plenty to do all year round. Whitby Holiday Rentals are your go to place for self-accommodating rentals for your trip to Whitby.

Cliff Walk Whitby

Firstly, to begin this walk, you will have the climb the famous 199 Steps towards the Abbey. Immediately you will be greeted with a grand view of Whitby, overlooking the town centre. After this, you have a choice of two different routes to take.

The quickest route is following Hawkser Lane all the way down past Hawkser and into Robin Hoods Bay. However, the route we recommend is going down the Cleveland Way for the best views. Hawkser Lane is a 5 mile journey which should take around 90 minutes, with the Cleveland Way being an extra mile.

The Cleveland Way can get very narrow and muddy at points, so we suggest wellies in the colder months. When you finally get there you will be greeted with fish & chip restaurants and pubs for you to have a well-earned break. Alternatively, for a shorter walk you can drive to the carpark and walk down to Robin Hoods Bay.
